GACL reclaims airport lands from McDan Group after court ruling

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully reclaimed over 16 acres of land near Kotoka International Airport after a court ruling favoured its legal action against the McDan Group of Companies.

In a statement, GACL announced that the Accra High Court on May 6, 2025, granted it full possession of two strategic parcels of land, measuring 10.63 and 5.66 acres respectively.

These sites are located adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International and have been under the control of McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited since 2012.

The court’s decision followed a legal battle launched in February this year in which GACL accused the McDan subsidiaries of violating lease terms and failing to pay accumulated rent.

The company demanded the recovery of $26,296 in unpaid ground rent and sought a permanent injunction against any future encroachment.

After reviewing the evidence, the court found no reasonable defence from the McDan entities and awarded all claims to GACL, including GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

“This repossession safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets and reinforces our commitment to accountability and the lawful stewardship of public property,” a source at GACL said.

The ruling follows previous tensions between the two sides, including a temporary suspension of McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 in late 2024 over financial disputes.

With the land now back under state control, GACL plans to explore development options that align with its goal of improving airport infrastructure and boosting revenue through aviation-related projects or public-private partnerships.
