The National Democratic Congress (NDC) staged a nationwide protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) following the commission’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register for the 2024 elections.

The demonstration dubbed ‘Enough is Enough’ went on in all 16 regions across Ghana on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

This came after the party’s leadership raised concerns over discrepancies in the 2024 voter register.

The anomalies were identified after the EC released the provisional voters register to the NDC and other political parties contesting in the 2024 election.

The NDC is calling for a forensic audit of the register, which it said will enhance the credibility of the upcoming general elections.

However, the EC insists that there is no need for a forensic audit as the issues the NDC is raising are normal occurrences that will be resolved before election day.

Following the party’s protest through the principal streets of Accra, the leadership led by the NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, presented a six-page petition to the commission at its headquarters in Accra.

Their demands included a bi-partisan forensic audit of the voter register and immediate publication of the forensic findings.

The rest are the re-exhibition of the voter register, a 5-day re-exhibition period following the audit, correction of unauthorised vote transfers, and adoption of a definitive timetable for electoral activities.

They also requested an emergency meeting of stakeholders, including ECOWAS and the African Union (AU), among others, and the implementation of accountability and integrity measures to prevent future manipulation of the voter register.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman of Operations of the EC, Samuel Tettey, received the petition on behalf of the commission.
