Full Judgement: Supreme Court dismisses NDC case against EC
The Supreme Court has released the full judgement in the consolidated case against Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress and Mark Takyi Banson had sued the EC over its attempt to include the new Ghana card and the passport as the accepted documents for its registration exercise.
But the largest opposition party, NDC and Mr Banson would not have it.
They argued that the commission should accept the existing voter card and birth certificate.
According to them, these two documents prove the individual is a Ghanaian.
On listening to the legal arguments presented by all parties, the apex court in its judgement affirmed the EC’s decision not to accept the old voters’ cards and birth certificates as a proof of eligibility of an applicant for the compilation of the new voters’ register.
With this judgement, the commission has gone ahead with its exercise, commencing on June 30, 2020.
