Freddie Blay denied bail following arrest in land dispute

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has been refused bail by the Akropong Circuit Court after his arrest over a land dispute at Kitase.

Mr Blay was handed over to the Akropong Police by officers in Accra on Monday, March 16, 2026, after the court issued a warrant for his arrest.

The case is linked to claims that he ordered the demolition of a house that was being built on a piece of land at Kitase.

According to information presented in court, the owner of the land reported the matter to the police. The police then invited Mr Blay to help with investigations, but he is said to have failed to respond to the invitation.

Charges were subsequently filed against him.

However, he did not appear in court on the scheduled date in April 2025 and did not give any explanation for his absence.

As a result, the court issued a warrant for his arrest, which was carried out on Monday.

People close to Mr Blay say he did not know about the arrest warrant before he was picked up. They explained that the land in question was bought by him in 1994, but later became the subject of a legal dispute.

According to the sources, the complainant had earlier won a case at the High Court in Koforidua. However, that decision has since been challenged and is currently under appeal.

They added that attempts to serve the complainant with documents related to the appeal have not been successful.

Mr Blay’s associates insist that apart from the appeal case, he was not aware of any other court case involving the land and only found out about the arrest warrant when he was arrested on Monday.
