Four siblings charred at Spintex
Four children have been burnt to ashes at Kotobabi near Spintex in Accra.
The siblings included a set of twin girls aged 7. The others were 11 years and a four-year-old.
All deceased children were sleeping in a wooden structure when the incident occurred.
The father of the four who is a steel bender said the children left his shop at about 8pm Thursday night to sleep.
He added that at 10pm, they noticed smoke coming from their wooden structure where the children were sleeping.
“As I stand here, I’ve lost all my children. I don’t know what to say. I’m just empty. I’m just here. Whatever God will do to me is fine,” he said while struggling to hold back his tears.
“I returned from work and saw my fine at her shop. She cooked and we all ate together. Later, the kids said they were sleepy so their mum took them home. She even went to bath at about 9: 30pm and returned to the shop.
“At 10 PM, I asked her to close the shop so we could go and rest. While at that, I saw smoke coming from where we sleep. I rushed there and saw our sleeping place in flames. I couldn’t even rescue a single child,” the father of the deceased narrated while sobbing.
Police response
The Baatsona District Police Commander, DSP James Asiedu said it took the intervention of the military to douse the inferno.
According to him, the fire service which arrived at the scene could not quench the fire, hence the military’s intervention.
“Fire service team from Kasapreko also came around and they couldn’t fight the fire and so, military from 37 also joined. We fought the fire till 12 midnight.”
He said the nature of the community was clumsy, making it difficult to detect the outbreak of the fire at its initial stages.
Several wooden structures were also charred during the fire outbreak.
