Four people, including two children, have died in a tragic accident at Kumawu in the Ashanti Region after a tipper truck carrying sand crashed into a roadside hair salon on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
The incident has left the usually busy community in shock and mourning, with residents struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of lives in what many describe as a preventable tragedy.
The truck, which was transporting sand from an ongoing road construction project in the area, reportedly lost control before veering off the road and slamming into a container structure used as a salon.
The victims were identified as the salon owner, her two children and a customer who was having her hair done at the time of the crash.
All four died instantly due to the impact. Four other people, including the driver of the truck, sustained injuries of varying severity.
Health officials say one of the critically injured victims has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialised treatment, while the other injured persons are receiving care at the Kumawu Government Hospital.
The accident has renewed concerns about road safety and the operations of heavy-duty trucks within the community.
Speaking to reporters, a resident, Kojo Sarfo Amoakohene, said this was the second accident involving a truck belonging to the same construction company working on the Kumawu road project.
“We are appealing to the construction company to do something about the behaviour of their drivers because residents now live in fear, especially those doing business along the roadside,” he said.
An earlier crash involving one of the company’s trucks reportedly damaged a mosque, though no lives were lost at the time.
