Former Asante Kotoko defender Atta Kusi regrets playing football

Former Asante Kotoko and King Faisal defender Atta Kusi has voiced out frustrations choosing football as his profession.

The right-back has almost spent his entire career in Ghana, featuring for Kotoko King Faisal, Ashantigold and Bibiani Goldstars in the Ghanaian top-flight.

As quoted by Sportsworldghana, Attah Kusi regrets not pursuing a different career path, saying it is challenging to build a successful career as a footballer in Ghana.

Due to poor salaries, the experienced defender has decided not play football in the country.

“I honestly regret playing football. It pains me that I didn’t learn a trade or focus on education. If I had, l’d be earning a better salary than what I got from playing football in this country,” Kusi shared.

He admitted feeling humiliated whenever he has to rely on friends for financial support, despite having played for renowned clubs like Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold.

“Whenever I reflect on my career, playing for big clubs like Kotoko, Ashanti Gold, and Gold Stars, I feel a deep sense of pity. It’s humiliating to have to beg my friends, who are mechanics and electricians, for pocket money,”

Atta Kusi then advised young footballers to seek for greener pastures for a successful career.

“I would advise all upcoming players to work hard and seek opportunities outside the country. It’s extremely challenging to build a successful career as a footballer here. Additionally, the lack of proper insurance for players means a single injury could prematurely end your career,” Kusi added.
