Foreign Ministry to evacuate stranded Ghanaian nationals willing to bear cost travels

Ghanaian nationals, who are stranded outside the country and are willing to bear the cost of their evacuation have been asked to submit their details to the commission to facilitate their evacuation.

The Ghanaian nationals are to submit their documents to the Ghana High Commission by close of Wednesday, May 13, 2020.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in a statement, explained that it would facilitate their travel back to Ghana if they were prepared to bear the cost.

“The Ministry is collating information on Ghanaians and Legal Permanent Residents who are stranded abroad as a result of the closure of international borders in the containment of COVID-19 pandemic.

“To this end, eligible nationals who are prepared to pay for their cost of travel to Ghana must submit details specified below to the Ghana High Commission not later than the date stated,” excerpts of the statement read.

Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate in New York recently began collecting the data of Ghanaians stranded in the United States.

The move follows several calls and agitations by some Ghanaians for the evacuation of citizens stuck in the United States after the closure of the country’s borders.

Also, there were earlier concerns from the Minority in Parliament to evacuate Ghanaian citizens who were stranded in other countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana had closed its borders on March 22, after the country recorded 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The border closure forms part of the stringent measures taken to avoid the possible spread of the virus.
