Floods claim three lives in Adentan — MCE confirms
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ella Esiman Nongo, has announced that three persons tragically lost their lives following the severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
According to the MCE, the fatalities occurred across different areas of the municipality, affecting Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” she stated.
The flooding caused by nearly three hours of heavy rains affected other areas like Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, and other regions of the capital.
Roads became impassable, vehicles were stranded, and the Odaw drain, which is crucial for stormwater management in central Accra, overflowed due to the excessive amount of water.
Madam Nongo mentioned that emergency response teams managed to rescue most of the residents stuck in the Ashiyie area.
However, she raised concerns about the extent of the damage and the persistent dangers faced by residents in low-lying, flood-prone regions.
“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she explained.
The MCE urged for stricter enforcement of building regulations and emphasised the need for immediate actions to address the root causes of the ongoing flooding issues in Adentan and the Greater Accra Region.
