#FixTheCountry campaigners to hit the streets on May 22
#FixTheCountry campaigners have announced streets protests on May 22.
According to the group, they will be demonstrating to demand an end to the culture of impunity that has characterized Ghana’s national security.
The campaigners have been irked by the recent assault on Citi FM journalist Caleb Kudah and bemoaned the trend of media statements issued by civil society organizations (CSOs) anytime abuses against journalists are recorded.
“These press statements have become the best example of an entrenched culture of inaction. We have become a ‘Press Statement Republic’,” a statement issued by the group said.
“The call to #FixTheCountryNow cannot be allowed to die on the altar of press releases. Now means Now!! Now in the shortest possible time”.
“In light of this, we have decided to have the conversation differently by taking our case to the streets. We are inviting all well-meaning Ghanaians to join us on May 22nd for a massive protest in Accra to reclaim our rights as citizens,” the release indicated.
On May 11, 2021, a journalist with Accra-based Citi FM was arrested and allegedly brutalized by national security operatives for taking pictures of abandoned cars at the premises of the National Security Ministry.
Subsequently, seven armed security officers stormed the station’s premises to fetch a female journalist who had received photos of the abandoned cars.
“Besides, we are a recognized media house, and you know people here, so if you want to talk to Zoe about information she has, this is not the way to do it,” Avle told citinewsrooom.com.
