Fix it or we protest – Driver unions warn over deplorable Pokuase–Nsawam road

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other commercial transport operators have given the Ministry of Roads and Highways a one-week ultimatum to fix the worsening Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a nationwide protest.

According to the unions, the road has become nearly impassable, posing serious safety risks to motorists, commuters, and residents, while significantly increasing operational costs due to frequent vehicle breakdowns and spare part replacements.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, August 14, the group warned: “This is not just a challenge for commercial drivers. It affects every motorist who depends on this critical corridor linking the Eastern, Ashanti, and northern regions. It’s disrupting lives and crippling economic activity”.

They revealed that the Roads Minister had previously promised to complete repairs within six weeks, but that deadline has passed with no visible progress.

The unions are demanding immediate action and have vowed to ground their vehicles and stage a mass protest if repairs do not begin within a week.

“We will not wait any longer. If the ministry fails to act, we will park our vehicles and protest until our demands are met,” the statement said.

They are also calling on all affected citizens, including drivers, commuters, and residents, to join the protest, describing it as a civic responsibility to demand accountability from the government.
