Fire Service recruits not sacked – GNFS

Management of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS)  has denied reports that over 1, 000 recruits of the Service have been sacked.

On Monday, April 8, news of some recruits of the Service being sacked made headlines on several news portals.

The recruits were reported to have received a directive from the Chief Fire Officer, Edwin Ekow Blankson to go home, though they were due for the final phase of their training.

But in a statement signed  by the Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, Robinson Okoe Doii on Monday, April 8, the service noted that the recruits were only asked to go home after their internship period, to be recalled at a later date.

“The recruits in question have not been sacked but asked to go home after the end of their attachment period and would be recalled for training after the preceding batches have completed their training,” the statement read.

According to the GNFS, the 2018/2019 recruits were divided into four batches, and the recruits in question are the fourth batch of the ongoing 2018/2019 recruitment exercise.

The statement further explained  that they have undergone a week orientation exercise at the Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) after which they proceeded to various fire stations for attachment prior to their final training.

The Service therefore stated that the over 1, 000 recruits will be recalled in September this year.
