Fire guts Yota Energy Company

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have brought a massive blaze at Yota Energy Company Ltd. in Shai Hills, Greater Accra Region, under control.

The fire tore through sections of the company’s facility, but swift action by firefighters prevented it from spreading and causing greater damage.

The blaze, which started around 11:04 a.m. on Monday, October 13, involved industrial ovens used for extracting pyrolysis oil from tyres.

Four fire tenders from the Gbetsile, Devtraco, Tema Metro, and Motorway Fire Stations responded swiftly, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby facilities.

According to the GNFS, the fire was confined by 12:55 p.m., brought under control by 8:08 p.m., and completely extinguished at 10:39 p.m. An excavator was later used to separate piles of burning tyres during the overhaul process.

Despite the intensity of the flames, firefighters salvaged about 95% of the company’s raw materials and warehouse. However, three industrial ovens and four control boards were partially destroyed.

Two individuals sustained burns and were rushed to the Tema General Hospital before the arrival of the fire crew.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the Tema Regional Public Relations Office of the GNFS.
