An inferno has razed over 70 shops at the Race Course market in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

The fire started around 7 am on Monday, December 18, 2023.

It destroyed metal container shops selling local spices, cowhide, and second-hand clothing.

While no casualties were reported, the fire has left many traders devastated after losing their means of livelihood.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) dispatched four fire engines to battle the flames and prevent further damage.

Ashanti Regional Commander of GNFS, ACFO Henry Giwah, complained about safety practices within the Race Course market.

He noted that some traders use stoves and gas cylinders for cooking in the market.

ACFO Giwah added that the service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

This comes after a fire ripped through the French-Line section of the Kumasi Central Market on Sunday, December 10, 2023.

The fire caused significant damage to shops selling clothes, phones, locally-made sandals, and medicinal products.

Despite the arrival of four fire tenders, firefighters struggled to bring the blaze under control.

The extensive damage and potentially hazardous materials within the market also presented challenges for the firefighting efforts.

While some shop owners were able to salvage some of their merchandise, many others lost all their goods.
