The boys’ dormitory of the Wulensi Senior High School in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region has been razed by fire.
All items in the building belonging to students were destroyed in the Wednesday, March 1, inferno.
The school’s assistant headmaster, Mr Atta Imoro, who confirmed the news, said the fire had left the students and school authorities stranded.
“The fire is very devastating because the building has completely been burnt, and it happened when the students were in class. So they couldn’t pick anything from the building. It has left them traumatised.
“The school is already facing accommodation problems, and for this block to burn down after we converted it from a classroom to a dormitory is really disheartening, so we are calling on everyone who can help us to come to our aid,” he lamented.
Mr Imoro also added that management has temporarily closed the school.
“Our plan is that we will close down the school for a week, so the students can go home while we see what we can do to accommodate them when they return.”
Although the cause of the outbreak is unknown, he explained that the intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reportedly came late due to the lack of a fire station in Nanumba South.
This is the third SHn affected by a fire outbreak in the first quarter of 2023.
A few weeks ago, a fire gutted the girls’ dormitory of Eremon Senior High School (SHS) in the Lawra municipality of the Upper West Region.
The fire on the night of Monday, February 6, 2023, left over 100 students stranded.
Some students of the Wa Senior High Technical School were also left stranded after two fire outbreaks gutted parts of their main girls’ dormitory block in the same region.
The incident happened on the night of Sunday, January 22.
It destroyed five rooms and the belongings of the girls while leaving 14 of the students hospitalised.
In December 2022, some students of Sandema Senior High School (SHS) in the Upper East Region burnt parts of their dormitory to protest the seizure of their mobile phones.
The second-year students reportedly set the cadet room ablaze in the heat of the violent protest.
The fire got out of control and spread to one of the school’s dormitory buildings before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived.
