Final year KNUST student arrested for murder over GHC1,200 debt
A final year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been arrested by the Pankrono Divisional Police Command in the Ashanti region for suspected murder.
The 23-year-old Geological Engineering student, Emmanuel Awuah, is reported to have killed his victim, a close friend of his, over the deceased’s inability to repay a GHC1,200 debt owed him.
According to the police, the suspect in the company of an accomplice killed Thomas Kwame Danso,24, with the hopes of selling his taxi to defray the cost.
The accomplice, who is yet to be identified, is currently on the run as police mount a search for him.
The Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Commander, ACP Akwasi Annor Arhin, said the incident happened at a teak plantation near Nyinahini in the Atwima Mponua District of the region.
ACP Arhin explained that the owner of the taxi reported of his missing driver.
Upon investigations, the police arrested Awuah who was in possession of the taxi with registration number, GE 1436-17.
The police, however, revealed the suspect had confessed he told his accomplice of the deceased’s refusal to pay him GHC 1,2OO owed him after several failed attempts to retrieve his money.
ACP Arhin further stated that the two lured the deceased, Thomas Kwame Danso to the crime scene where they strangled him with a rope till he died.
The police said at the time the investigation team visited the crime scene, the head of Thomas had almost decomposed.
Emmanuel has been charged with murder and is expected to appear before the Mampongteng court on Thursday, July 16.
Meanwhile, the decomposing body of Thomas has also been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue.
