FDA seizes GH¢11.5m worth of ‘RED’ at Kpoglu border

The Volta Regional Directorate of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), in collaboration with national security agencies, has intercepted a major consignment of Tapentadol Hydrochloride tablets commonly known as “RED” at the Kpoglu border.

The seizure, made on August 14, 2025, involved 7,700 tablets of 250mg Tapentadol, valued at GH¢11.5 million.

The unregistered drugs were hidden in sacks aboard a truck registered TG 6891 BI, travelling from Nigeria to Ghana.

Gordon Akurugu, FDA Regional Head for Volta and Oti, confirmed that the operation was part of a routine surveillance exercise.

The truck driver, Oliver Takra of Go Express Transport Company, and an agent were arrested on the spot and handed over to the police.

Two additional suspects, including a Nigerian man and a woman believed to be the intended recipients, are assisting with ongoing investigations.

According to the FDA, the importation violates Section 122 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which prohibits the unauthorised import of medicines and related products.

Akurugu emphasised that only Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour are legally approved entry points for pharmaceuticals.

Bringing drugs through inland borders is strictly illegal and punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

He assured the public that all suspects will be prosecuted and commended the swift and coordinated efforts of the Customs Division (CEPS), National Investigations Bureau, Narcotics Control Commission, and National Security in carrying out the successful interception.

“This seizure sends a strong message: we are serious about protecting public health and keeping dangerous, unregulated medicines out of the country,” Mr. Akurugu said.
