FDA recalls Choice Irish Cream drink containing sex drug
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has mandated the recall of Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink from the market following laboratory tests that confirmed the presence of Sildenafil Citrate, a prescription medication utilised for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In a statement released in Accra on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the Authority indicated that the product, produced by 1 Africa Industries Limited, was discovered to be contaminated with an undeclared drug substance, which poses health risks to consumers.
The statement, endorsed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni, noted that the inclusion of Sildenafil in a food product could lead to hazardous reactions when combined with certain medications.
It cautioned that this chemical could interact with drugs such as nitroglycerin, resulting in a sudden decrease in blood pressure and the potential for heart attack or stroke.
The Authority further stated that prolonged consumption of the substance could lead to additional health issues, including loss of vision or hearing, painful or extended erections, and psychological dependence.
Prof. Opuni mentioned that the FDA is collaborating with the manufacturer to ensure the removal of all affected products from the market for safe disposal. He reminded the public that the adulteration of food products constitutes an offence under Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
Consumers, retailers, and distributors have been urged to cease the sale or consumption of the drink and to report any individuals attempting to sell it to the nearest FDA office.
The FDA affirmed its commitment to continuously monitor the market to safeguard public health and to ensure that all regulated products, including alcoholic beverages, are safe and manufactured in accordance with standards.
