A 16-year-old girl has died following a rainstorm that destroyed Jachie in the Ashanti Region.

Several other residents also sustained injuries of varying degrees.

The storm also ripped the roofs of at least 50 buildings.

Electricity poles were damaged, leaving parts of Jachie without an electricity supply.

Charles Osei Tutu, the father of the deceased, Abena Ofoda, narrating the ordeal, said she was at home when the incident occurred.

“The winds came very strong. I was at the workplace, but she was with her mother in the kitchen. The roof ripped off, and she was frightened by the movement of the roof by the wind.

“She told her mother she was not too comfortable with the strong winds. The mother then took her to my other house nearby. The mother then returned to get some items only to realize my daughter had passed away when she went back to the house,” the distraught father said.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said they are working to repair the damaged buildings as they await further help from the government.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Bosomtwi District Assembly, Joseph Assuming, told journalists that his office is collaborating with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to restore power to the affected areas.

This comes after a 37-year-old man reportedly died after a downpour at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

The heavy rainstorm reportedly caused the collapse of several facilities in the district.

According to residents, the deceased, identified as Kwabena Emma, was swept away by a heavy flood on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Some residents revealed that Kwabena was taking shelter in front of a shop but decided to go home despite the rains that did not cease for hours.

They added that Kwabena Emma fell and drowned in a huge gutter in the area while on his way home, leading to his death.
