Farmers demand action on Komenda Sugar Factory

Sugarcane farmers in Ghana are calling on Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare to take immediate and concrete steps toward reviving the dormant Komenda Sugar Factory.

The Sugarcane Farmers Association of Ghana says it’s growing increasingly frustrated over the lack of progress since the Minister’s visit to the site in February.

In a statement released on May 4, the Association described the government’s response to their appeal as disappointing and lacking urgency.

Farmers say they backed President John Mahama and the NDC in the hope that this administration would succeed where the previous one failed, to get the factory running and support local agriculture.

“We feel deceived. After the Minister’s visit in February, we expected action. But nothing is happening on the ground,” said Nana Joshua Kingsley Mensah, Secretary of the Association.

The farmers stressed that their livelihoods are tied to the revival of the factory.

Despite being ready to supply sugarcane, they say they’ve seen no progress on site and were disheartened to find the factory missing from the 2025 national budget.

They are, therefore, calling for the immediate appointment of a board of directors and are pushing for representation on it.

According to them, local farmers should be considered key players in the factory’s operation, not just suppliers, but decision-makers.

The Association also reminded President Mahama of his pledge to make the Central Region a hub for sugar production, warning that without urgent intervention, the factory could remain idle for yet another political term.
