Fanciful governance won’t fix the economy – Amin Adam fires NDC

Former Finance Minister and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has strongly criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing its leadership as “fanciful” and disconnected from the real struggles of ordinary Ghanaians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 16, Dr. Amin Adam accused the NDC of masking deep-rooted economic failures with slogans and propaganda that are now falling apart under public and institutional scrutiny.

“The goodwill the NDC enjoyed at the start of their administration is fast eroding under the weight of poor policies,” he said, citing rising taxes, job losses, and worsening living conditions.

Dr. Amin Adam condemned the newly introduced “Dumsor Levy,” calling it a symbol of the government’s insensitivity to public hardship.

“This levy will only worsen the cost of living. Transport operators warned of fare hikes, but government ignored their concerns,” he said.

He also accused the NDC of turning its back on young people by laying off workers without justification, especially those who supported national service, NABCO, and other government programs.

“If you’ve lost your job recently, understand this: the NDC has abandoned you, the next NPP government will restore those jobs and restore dignity to Ghana’s youth,” he declared.

Challenging the government’s claim of economic recovery, Dr. Amin Adam revealed that the apparent stability in the cedi is not due to strong fundamentals, but rather foreign exchange interventions by the Bank of Ghana.

Dr. Amin Adam also accused the government of manipulating budget data, highlighting a build-up of unverified arrears exposed by the IMF.

He warned that the government’s 2025 budget is under stress, pointing to over GH¢6 billion in bond repayments and a troubling trend in treasury auctions.

Dr. Amin Adam further described the NDC’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Programme as a theoretical gimmick with no clear plan or funding source.

He urged the Minister for Finance to use the upcoming Mid-Year Budget Review to clearly explain how the government intends to fund both the economy and its flagship programmes.

While acknowledging the internal challenges following the NPP’s 2024 defeat, Dr. Amin Adam called for unity and renewed commitment.

He concluded by rallying support for the party’s upcoming National Conference, expressing confidence in the NPP’s ability to bounce back.
