The family of a 34-year-old man has accused Asawase police officers of manhandling their relative, leading to his death.
Salahudeen Tafilu whose death prompted an attack on the Asawase Police Station reportedly died during a police swoop on the area.
Officers reportedly stormed the area and conducted a swoop, arresting several people, including the deceased on Sunday, July 23, 2023.
However, Salahudeen was later found dead.
The youth in response stormed the police station and reportedly pelted stones and vandalized other properties in the building.
Narrating the incident, Thomas Apamsana, a co-worker of the deceased said the family received a call that he had been arrested.
“We were wondering why they arrested him. Alhaji asked me to check the place the operation went on, I was told he was at the back of the workplace, I checked and he was lying down dead.
“No one was there, because the police came to scatter the place. The people here all ran away. And the boy was dead, and we took the body to the morgue,” he said.
He said the family is, therefore, calling on the police to probe the issue and make sure justice is served.
“They should have taken him to the hospital, even if he is a criminal, you have to take him to the hospital. But you can’t leave him alone like that. We are seeking justice for him. Those who were there were arrested, but he was left there alone. Why is he a fowl? Even a fowl, you can’t kill it and leave it like that,” Thomas Apamsana stated.
The deceased has been buried according to Islamic rites amidst tears from family and friends.
Meanwhile, there is a heavy police deployment in the area to avert further attacks from the youth.
