The family of a 52-year-old mechanic sprayer has been left in despair after a tree branch fell on him, killing him instantly at Bubuashie, in Accra.

It was a solemn moment as friends, family and sympathisers gathered at the residence of the mechanic to console the bereaved wife and children.

The sad incident which happened on Sunday, July 17, around 4:30 pm also left a NADMO official injured and displaced some residents.

The fallen tree had also disconnected the electricity connection of residents living in some parts of Bubuahsie.

The father of two boys had reportedly climbed the tree in an attempt to help cut off the hanging tree which had blocked a section of the road, to allow for free flow of traffic.

Unfortunately for him, his good deed caused him to fall off the tree which first bounced him up in the air until he landed heavily on the tarred road.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

A neighbour, who was still in shock blamed authorities for the unfortunate accident.

“This is very sad and as you can see the wife cannot even come out. This accident was so unexpected. The sisters are all here. It was a shock to all of us. Somebody I even spoke to just this morning.

“It could have been prevented. We have an assemblyman in this area. This tree has been here for over 20 years now. Are they telling us that they haven’t seen it? We need to be proactive as a country, we can’t always wait for the unfortunate to happen,” he said.

Giving an update on the injured NADMO official, NADMO Communications Director George Ayisi, said he has since been discharged as his injury was not severe.

He, however, urged the Department of Parks and Gardens to ensure that there is always continuous monitoring of trees in the locality.

“It’s unfortunate but normally when it comes to these trees Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) personnel do the cutting and the Department of Parks and Gardening are to continue to observe the trees and their branches.

“We have to cut the trees, and we, at NADMO, are conscientizing the people in the area. We don’t need to wait for things to happen so what we will do is prevent a recurrence of this. When you do continuous monitoring you’ll know which trees are weak for pruning,” he said on Joynews monitored by theghanareport.com.
