The family of a 29-year-old miner allegedly attacked the staff of the Suhum Government Hospital, alleging negligence in his death.
The incident happened on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, when the 29-year-old died in the emergency ward of the hospital.
He was rushed to the facility after he got involved in an accident in Suhum while he was returning from Accra to Anyinam.
The family, however, accused the staff of negligence for failing to transfer him to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further treatment.
They reportedly called other family members and friends who came to the hospital to attack the health workers.
It took the intervention of the Suhum police to calm the situation.
Speaking to journalists, a member of the family said the deceased seemed very well and interactive when they first rushed him to the hospital.
He said a nurse who attended to him informed them that all the bones in his thigh were broken and referred them to someone in Kumasi who could help.
However, he said the situation escalated suddenly after they returned him to the emergency ward.
“The person I went with called me that they had put oxygen on him because he could barely breathe. They told me they would refer him, so they called the ambulance. His father and brother came, and I went to the police station with his brother. We were at the police station when we had a call that he had passed on,” he said.
A security guard at the hospital also told the media that the angry family and friends did not spare any member of staff during the rampage.
“I saw a pick-up car, and two gentlemen got down. One started addressing the journalist, and the other entered the hospital. The family entered the hospital and started attacking the nurses while destroying items,” he narrated.
Meanwhile, the police have begun investigations into the attack.
