Explosion at gold refinery kills two in central region
Two people have been confirmed dead in the gas explosion at Denkyira Akuaboase in the Denkyira West of the Central region.
The explosion took place at the local gold refinery after a gas cylinder they had just received from a vendor, after refilling, caught fire killing two workers instantly.
The NADMO district coordinator, Mr. Godfred Sulley, who confirmed the deaths, did not give details about the identities of the deceased.
He described the scene as an eye-sore because pieces of human flesh were scattered hundreds of meters away from the gas station after the explosion.
Mr. Sulley confirmed that the incident occurred as a result of the gas cylinder which was heated up by vibrations not allowed to settle down before the gas cylinder was filled up.
According to him, a motor rider was sent to fill a gas cylinder from the district capital which is Duaso and the rider had to transport the cylinder over the poor roads which was quite a distance.
When the motor rider reached the gas station, the vendors immediately started to fill the gas cylinder without allowing the residue to settle down.
This ultimately led to an explosion, the district coordinator said.
People have expressed their deep sense of anguish as they count their losses in terms of the properties damaged and also the lives lost.
Apart from the machines in the refinery, which have been destroyed beyond recognition, four houses have also been hit by the explosion.
Fortunately, the explosion occurred on a weekend when a lot of people had gone to church, if not for that, the casualties would have increased.
Some people also noticed the fire early and fled.
The people in the area have been affected by this accident and are appealing to the authorities of the gas station that such an event does not repeat itself.
Other victims who were affected by the inferno were initially transferred to the Denkyira Government hospital but were later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) due to the severity of their wounds.
The officers at KATH have said the condition of the victims require critical care.
