A retired military officer and a pastor have each been sentenced to six months in prison for their roles in the death of a taxi driver following a dispute over an alleged fake GHC50 note.
The convicts, Joseph Abusah, a former soldier, and Benjamin Kofi Agbetiafah, a pastor, were found guilty after assaulting Solomon Dapaah, whose life was cut short after a confrontation that began at a shop.
According to court proceedings, Solomon had patronised a shop belonging to the pastor’s mother and paid with a GHC 50 note.
The woman reportedly suspected the note was counterfeit and raised an alarm after the taxi driver had driven away.
In a turn of events that shocked many in the community, Abusah and Agbetiafah are said to have pursued Solomon in a pick-up vehicle.
They eventually caught up with him and allegedly subjected him to severe beatings.
Witness accounts presented in court indicated that the assault left the driver unconscious at the scene.
He was rushed to a health facility but was pronounced dead on arrival.
