Erik ten Hag wins September’s Premier League Manager of the Month award

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been named Premier League Manager of the Month for September, having pulled off a dramatic turnaround following a dreadful start to the campaign.

United won both of their Premier League games in September, beating Leicester away and then an Arsenal side that had been on their own impressive winning streak. That extended United’s winning run to four league games after falling to consecutive defeats in August.

It is only Ten Hag’s second month as a Premier League manager following his summer switch from Ajax and he is the first Dutchman to scoop the prize since Ronald Koeman in January 2016. No United manager has taken it since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2019, nearly four years ago.

Koeman was a multiple winner during his successful time with Southampton, while Martin Jol is the only other Dutch coach to be named manager of the month in the Premier League.

Ten Hag beat Spurs boss Antonio Conte and interim Bournemouth coach Gary O’Neil to the award, winning this accolade sooner into his Premier League career than both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp did respectively in theirs.

United forward Marcus Rashford has already been named Premier League Player of the Month, while Christian Eriksen was voted the club’s September player of the month by supporters.

Ten Hag and his players will start October with their toughest test of the season yet, heading east across the city for a Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
