The Executive Director of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Tiwaa Addo Danquah, has called on Ghanaians to actively engage in the battle against corruption.

According to her, the fight against corruption cannot rely solely on politicians and public officeholders.

She stressed the need for collective efforts to deal with this canker.

The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023, says Ghana has maintained its score of 43 for the fourth consecutive year and ranked 70th out of 180 countries.

Also, a UN corruption report on Ghana says Ghanaians from all walks of life paid GH¢5 billion as bribes to public officials to facilitate public service delivery in public institutions in the areas of health, education, transportation, security, and justice delivery in 2021.

According to the report, the prevalence of bribery is highest among police officers, 53.2%, followed by Ghana Immigration Service Officers, 37.4%, and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs officers, 33.6%.

In response to Ghana’s 43rd position in the latest corruption perception index, Maame Tiwaa Addo Danquah urged citizens to contribute to the anti-corruption fight by volunteering information.

“I keep saying that everybody must be part of the fight against corruption, not just those in authority, it must be everybody. Everyone must ensure that they are playing their role in the fight against corruption.

“When you see something, not only in the physical security but even in the area of corruption, you must say something because if you don’t say it, it will get bad and that is what we should be worried about,” she said.
