Energy Ministry traces over 2,600 missing ECG containers at Tema Port
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a significant breakthrough in the investigation into missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), revealing that 2,637 containers have now been successfully traced.
This updated figure, more than double the initially reported 1,300, has reignited public interest and debate surrounding the saga.
In March 2025, the Ministry disclosed that about 1,300 ECG containers were unaccounted for, with only 40 located at the time.
However, speaking on May 27, 2025, Richmond Rockson, Head of Communications at the Ministry, clarified the timeline and addressed the confusion over the conflicting numbers.
He explained that during the transition period, nearly 3,000 ECG containers were flagged as uncleared at the port.
Upon assuming office, the new Minister of Energy was informed that about 2,500 containers remained pending, prompting him to order a full investigation to establish the exact figures.
“The Minister was receiving conflicting reports, so he directed a detailed probe to determine the actual number of missing containers,” Rockson stated.
According to the investigation, a total of 2,637 containers were involved, with 2,583 now confirmed to be in the custody of port authorities.
Mr Rockson emphasised that the investigation was essential in resolving discrepancies and restoring confidence in the ECG’s logistics and inventory systems.
He also hinted that more containers could be uncovered as the probe continues.
“If the investigation is allowed to proceed, we believe additional containers may still be found,” he added.
The Ministry’s update comes as part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in the energy sector, particularly during the ongoing transition to a more efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
