Energy Minister denies ECG sale rumors

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has once again dismissed claims that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

His remarks come amid growing public concern about the future of the state-owned power distributor.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, during the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Jinapor made it clear that recent cabinet decisions are focused on enhancing ECG’s operations through limited private sector participation, not divestiture.

“To ensure we boost revenue collection and improve efficiency, Cabinet has approved private sector involvement in specific areas of ECG’s operations.

“Let me be clear,  we are not selling ECG. What we are introducing is private participation, particularly in billing and revenue collection, to improve service delivery,” the Minister explained.

His clarification comes in response to concerns from the public and civil society groups, who have expressed fears that ongoing reforms could lead to a covert privatisation of the utility.

Mr. Jinapor emphasised that ECG will remain fully publicly owned, and that the government is committed to protecting national interest while improving efficiency and accountability in the power sector.

The Minister also announced progress in rural electrification, revealing that 63 communities have recently been connected, with a broader goal of achieving universal access to electricity by 2028.

He urged local businesses and entrepreneurs to take advantage of opportunities arising from the energy sector reforms.

“This is a major investment opportunity. We invite Ghanaian businesses to get involved and help drive the transformation we all want to see”.
