Elikem writes: A cheer song for the Black Stars| our hope despite sinking economy
Dear Black Stars,
Here’s another piece, just like I do each time you have been engaged in a tournament, this cheer song.
I speak on behalf of the millions of silent supporters who are intentional about showing their love for you due to the times, they have supported you with their all, only to be let down in the end.
This is not about your abysmal performance in the past, making people doubt whether the jersey you wore, actually told on your desire to bring a trophy home.
As you go into your first game, at Qatar 2022, you may not have been described as one of the stronger sides in the tournament but for the people back home, who have set aside their political differences to rally behind you, who will be investing their hard-earned cash into betting to declare you winners against Portugal, to the ones who have promised to do weird things like Sister Afia, who has vowed to strip naked and swim if you win, for the little boy at Atebubu, who aspires to be a soccer player to play for the National team someday, for Ghanaians living in Akufo-Addo’s Ghana, amidst the high cost of fuel and rising inflation, the surge in the prices of goods and services, outcry that alas, the ‘You’re that glitter of hope.’
A good show, will make you that ray of sunshine, for the Ghanaian living home as, our sinking economy really distresses many, your performance at this tournament, will give us something to dance, laugh and talk about.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, appealed to Ghanaians to put aside their political affiliation and rally behind you, because the team represents “the hopes of an expectant nation for success on the global stage.”
He stressed that: “We might hold different views in our politics, religion, or ethnicity, but the Black Stars are the only senior national team we have, and we have always been united in rallying behind our team.”
President Akufo-Addo also urged all Ghanaians to support you when he met a delegation from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the All Supporters Union of Ghana, at the Jubilee House on Thursday, 17 November 2022.
President Akufo-Addo told the delegation he is optimistic that you are in Qatar to make a statement.
“I know that they are not there to make up the numbers and that they are going to give a very good account of themselves.”
He didn’t end it there, he has come all the way, leaving the ailing economy behind with his golden chair, to support you at stadium 974.
Once again, despite the heartaches you have given Ghanaians in the past, making them fall out of love with you, today, remember that, the weight of this country entirely rests on your shoulders as team members. The country is throwing away all political differences and will for once not exactly be concerned about today’s 2023 Budget presentation by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. Afterall, the ship already sank, but you the Black Stars will be the focus.
Do you now see how crucial this game means to us?
Black Stars,
The other year, I wrote you a cheer song, you disappointed me.
Again I’m leading this cheer song in pursuit of your victory in Qatar.
Remember;
“I gave you all of me My heart, my soul, my body I kissed your ass and licked your pee, After all you were my demigod, my idol, my shining star… What did you do with it?
You threw my apples away… You took all the times I’ll still lay the bed and await your arrival home for granted, Whilst you went flirting with the world In search of fame, fortune, becoming complacent in the process You put a knife through my heart and turned me into an ugly soul You scarred my body after I lay naked for you to have your way. … You had me, all of me yet you took all that for granted.
Yesterday I moved on…. Today you come craving my attention again. My support, my heart, body and soul: all of me… Make me fall in love again.
Bring back all the magical moments when you touched me and I melted… When your kick made me do a royal dance because I had danced with a demigod. When the crown that you gave me sparkled with glitters of red, gold, green and the black star. I’ll bare my soul to you… If only you will make me fall in love with you again.
Go Black Stars! Go Ghana! Go Go Go! Make me fall in love again…”
The plea of Ama Ghana.
Even if you cannot beat Portugal, do not let the nation down, our politicians have let us down, but our Black Stars, ought to make us fall in love again.
On this note, know that our vuvuzelas which we have come to adopt will be blowing from Accra to Paga to Aflao to Elubo. Our voices will echo to sing your praises, we’ll be waving our flags, adorned in our jerseys and more importantly, our hearts will be with you. Make sure you don’t break them.
Make us fall in love with you again. Give us hope amidst this economic crisis.
We love you, Go Black Stars!
Black stars break our hearts small, and then mend it beautifully. Our flags are still flying high and our vuvuzelas are blowing louder. Go blackstars ! GO GO GO!
This is a nice piece.
