The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an increase in electricity and water tariffs effective July 1.
In its second quarterly review for 2024, the PURC announced an upward adjustment effective from July 1 to September 30, 2024.
Residential electricity consumers will see a rate hike of 5.84%, while lifeline consumers using 0-30 kWh will experience a 3.45% increase.
Non-residential consumers and those using more than 31 kWh will also face a 5.84% tariff rise.
Additionally, electricity tariffs for the industrial category will increase by 4.92%.
Water tariffs for all customer classes will also increase by 5.16% during the same period.
The adjustments were outlined in a May 31 statement by the PURC.
Executive Secretary Ishmael Ackah explained that the reviews were conducted in line with the commission’s quarterly tariff review mechanism.
This mechanism considers movements in key uncontrollable factors, including the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Ghana cedi, domestic inflation, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, particularly natural gas.
The PURC emphasized that it considered the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians when making these adjustments.
