The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved an increase in electricity and water tariffs, effective May 3, 2025, as part of its quarterly review for the first half of the year.
Electricity tariffs will rise by an average of 14.75%, while water tariffs will increase by 4.02%. The Commission says this adjustment is necessary to maintain financial stability for utility providers and to prevent service disruptions due to under-recovery of costs.
According to the PURC, key factors influencing the tariff hike include the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, projected inflation, fuel prices (especially natural gas), and the current mix of hydro and thermal power generation.
A significant contributor to the adjustment is the need to recover 50% of an outstanding GHS976 million revenue shortfall from previous quarters in 2024. The Commission plans to recover the remaining 50% over the course of 2025 to ease the financial pressure on consumers.
While acknowledging the economic challenges facing Ghanaians, the PURC stressed that the decision balances the sustainability of utility service delivery with consumer protection.
Full details of the revised tariffs will be published in the government gazette and made available on the Commission’s website for transparency.
