The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will outdoor its vice presidential candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
In March 2024, the party officially confirmed Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate of the party’s flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, for the 2024 presidential election.
The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, announcing the confirmation, said Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination underscored the NDC’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, diversity and the empowerment of women in leadership roles.
He added that she possessed extensive qualifications and experience and brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s presidential ticket.
On the other hand, the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, aiming to ‘break the 8’, have yet to name their vice presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has requested an extension of time to consult on his selection of a running mate for the 2024 election.
However, the names of leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who are all cabinet ministers and incumbent MPs, have surfaced as possible candidates for the role of running mate to the NPP presidential candidate.
The speculated running mates are Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe constituency in the Ashanti Region and Minister for Education; Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), Member of Parliament for Manhyia South constituency also in the Ashanti Region and Minister for Energy; and Dr Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi in the Eastern Region and Minister for Food and Agriculture.
