Election 2024: Here are the 42 women elected to parliament

Source The Ghana Report

The 2024 general elections in Ghana marked a significant milestone for women in politics.

Following the elections, 42 women will serve in the country’s 276-member legislature, with 40 female MPs serving in the 8th Parliament.

This achievement underscores the growing role of women in shaping Ghana’s political landscape.

In addition to the increase in female parliamentarians, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will become Ghana’s first female vice president when President-elect John Dramani Mahama is sworn into office on January 7, a historic accomplishment.

Her election symbolises expanding opportunities for women in leadership positions across the nation.

Despite this progress, women’s representation in Parliament remains relatively low.

Since 1992, women have made up only 5.8% of the total seats.

Even when women manage to secure seats, their tenures are often short-lived, reflecting the deep-rooted barriers that hinder full participation in politics.

The women who scaled all hurdles to emerge victorious are named below.
