Ejura shooting: Gov’t presents GHC500,000 compensation to bereaved families
The government has presented GH 500, 000 to the families of the two persons who were killed at Ejura, in the Ejura-Sekyeredumase Municipality in June 2021 during a street protest.
Each family received GH 250, 000 as compensation for the death of Nasiru Yussif and Murtala Mohammed.
The presentation was done by the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Naana Ayiah, at the Ejura Chief’s Palace to the family members in the presence of their legal teams.
The presentation was in compliance with recommendations made in the report of the Ministerial Committee set up by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, to investigate the Ejura protest, as well as come out with their findings and recommendations.
A family representative and member of the Joint Committee of Victims of the Ejura Incidents, Mr Abdullai Abubakar, confirmed the compensation to the Ghanaian Times in a telephone interview on Saturday, and said those injured were not part of the compensation.
He said the committee was still in dialogue with the government to enable those injured to receive their compensations as well, and expressed the hope that they would also receive their compensations in due time.
A press statement released and signed by the Legal Advisor to the Victims of the Ejura incident, Mr Oliver Barker-Vormawor, also confirmed that, the legal team received a compensation offer from the government.
