Member of Parliament for Ejura Sekyeredumase, Bawa Braimah, has called for an autopsy to be conducted on the body of a resident whose death in police custody triggered chaos in the area.

On Friday, January 10, 2025, the police arrested the suspect on allegations of theft and detained him for further investigations.

According to the police, the suspect complained of feeling unwell and was immediately transported to the Ejura Government Hospital where he passed away while undergoing treatment.

As officials prepared to transfer the deceased’s body to the morgue for preservation and an autopsy, enraged members of the Ejura community stormed the police station in protest, setting parts of the facility on fire.

A group from the mob also stormed the hospital, forcibly retrieving the deceased suspect’s body.

Speaking to reporters, the MP described the incident as unfortunate and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

The family of the deceased who have been demanding answers from the police have supported the MP’s call for an autopsy.

“We want to know what happened to our son. We want to know if he was beaten to death or if he died from natural causes. We deserve to know the truth,” a member of the family said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has promised to investigate the incident and to cooperate in the autopsy process.
