The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, April 30, 2024, to elect a new Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ejisu constituency.
This follows the demise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for the area, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah, on March 7, 2024.
This conforms with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides that a by-election shall be held within 60 days after a vacancy occurs in Parliament.
Article 112(6) of the 1992 Constitution also states that a by-election should not be held three months before a general election.
Meanwhile, the NPP has set Saturday, April 13, 2024, as the date for electing a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu by-election.
The party has since cleared nine aspirants to contest.
Following the opening of nominations on April 2, 2024, and subsequent vetting on April 6, the party’s vetting committee confirmed the eligibility of all candidates.
On the other hand, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) disclosed that it was yet to decide whether to participate in the by-election.

According to Mustapha Gbande, the party’s Deputy General Secretary, the NDC was prioritising mourning the MP’s demise rather than rushing to fill the vacant seat.
Mr Gbande urged NDC sympathisers in the constituency to be patient and assured them that the party would disclose its intentions regarding the by-election in due course.
