Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Effutu, Central Region, have staged a dramatic protest, setting office equipment ablaze over the exclusion of their 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, Dr. James Kofi Annan, from recent government appointments.
The angry supporters stormed the NDC constituency office, forcibly breaking in to remove furniture and equipment, which they set on fire.
Their frustration stems from what they see as a broken campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama, whom they claim assured Dr. Annan of a government position during the election campaign.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Angela Mansah voiced her discontent, emphasising Dr. Annan’s dedication to the NDC and his critical role in strengthening the party’s presence in Effutu.
“James Kofi Annan has sacrificed so much for this party. He has contested twice and worked tirelessly to strengthen the NDC in Effutu. During the campaign, President Mahama promised to appoint him, yet he has been overlooked,” Mansah said.
The supporters are demanding that Dr. Annan be recognised for his contributions and appointed to a role in President Mahama’s administration. They argue that honouring the campaign promise is vital to maintaining party unity and avoiding further unrest in Winneba.
“If Dr. Annan continues to be ignored, we may have no choice but to escalate our actions,” Mansah warned, adding that the group was determined to ensure their grievances were addressed.
The protesters have urged the President and party leadership to act swiftly, stating that Dr. Annan’s inclusion in the administration would be a sign of good faith and a step toward strengthening the NDC in Effutu.
