The Ministry of Education has directed the Management of the University of Ghana (UG) to comply with the 15% fee increment approved by Parliament.
The directive comes after a meeting with representatives of some public universities, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and other relevant stakeholders on Thursday, January 5.
The meeting comes on the back of accusations by the student body that some public universities had increased their fees beyond the 15 per cent threshold approved by Parliament.
NUGS further revealed that some schools charged students over 30% and, in some cases, over 50%.
They subsequently petitioned some relevant state institutions, including Parliament, to address their concerns.
At a presser after the meeting, the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, said the universities have all resolved to abide by the 15 per cent as mandated by Parliament.
“You have heard from our great university about steps that they have taken in cases where the fees were over 15 per cent. They are doing refunds. They want to live within the 15 per cent as mandated by Parliament,” he assured.
