The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, says the introduction of the new curriculum has improved the literacy rate in Ghanaian schools at the basic level.
Dr. Adutwum attributed the success of the new curriculum to the introduction of a series of innovations by the government.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Education Minister also refuted allegations that educational standards in Ghana have fallen.
“I was also surprised to hear another colleague talking about how standards are falling, and my colleague asked a question about a change in the curriculum. The curriculum has been changed, and so many things are happening now, and it is the implementation of that curriculum that is leading to the improvements that we are seeing in a number of schools across the country.”
He added that “the literacy rate that we had in this country, which was at a point in time 2 percent for primary 2 students in terms of proficiency, has risen to 38 percent”.
