ECOWAS Court orders Ghana to compensate New Force’s Shalimar

The ECOWAS Court has ruled in favour of Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force Movement, in her case against the Republic of Ghana for violating her fundamental rights.

The court found that Ghana violated Ms Abbiusi’s rights through her wrongful arrest, rearrest, and illegal deportation in December 2023, actions that severely harmed her personal and professional reputation.

It concluded that these acts by the Ghana Immigration Service contravened Article 6 on the Liberty of People, especially as all charges against her had been dropped by the state prosecutor.

As part of the ruling, the court ordered the Ghanaian government to compensate Ms Abbiusi, emphasising justice and accountability.

Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Madina legislator who represented Ms. Abbiusi together with lawyer Belinda Narkey Quaynor, welcomed the decision, expressing gratitude for the court’s commitment to upholding human rights.

“We feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has protected the rights of Shalimar,” Mr Sosu remarked.

The New Force reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring fairness and justice across African nations and urged the Ghanaian government to “respect human rights and uphold the rule of law, as guaranteed by our Constitution.”

“The actions against Ms. Abbiusi exemplify a broader issue of political persecution that threatens the foundations of democracy in Ghana,” The New Force declared.

They urged civil society organisations, human rights advocates, and the international community to condemn these violations and actively support efforts to reform government institutions to prevent future abuses.
