Economic Fighters League raises red flags over Affirmative Action Act

The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has opined that while the Affirmative Action Act is crucial for Ghana’s progress, proportional representation and a new constitution will ensure that all voices are equally represented in decision-making.

According to the group, although the Act is designed to provide greater opportunities for women and promote a fairer society, the outcomes of its implementation remain uncertain.

The Parliament of Ghana passed Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill into law on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, after more than a decade under consideration.

Among other things, the Act is to ensure that women make up at least 30% of governance and decision-making positions by 2030.

In a statement signed by EFL’s Head of Legal Command, Abena Awuku-Larbi, failure to tackle all possible consequences of the Act will give rise to other issues that will overshadow the benefits.

“The Bill’s limited focus on gender equality may inadvertently reinforce systemic inequalities affecting other marginalized groups. By overlooking the specific challenges faced by people in rural areas, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ persons, and people from ethnic minorities, the Bill risks failing to promote true equality and inclusivity for all.

“The adoption of a quota system, like all quota systems, presents various considerable risks. Quotas risk being manipulated by those in power to maintain their authority or to favour certain demographics,” a part of the statement read.

EFL is, therefore, advocating for the implementation of proportional representation, which can create a more inclusive political environment that promotes citizen involvement and activism.

A new constitution, the group said, will also guarantee that every Ghanaian, especially the marginalized, has a voice in decision-making.

It added that this will ultimately strengthen the enforcement of the Affirmative Action Act.

“The Affirmative Action Bill is crucial for the progress of our nation. When combined with #ProportionalRepresentation and a #NewConstitution, it paves the way for a promising future for our democracy,” the statement concluded.
