ECG/PDS Concession: “There is no way PDS is coming back” – K. T. Hammond
Ranking Member for the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has said that the suspension of a power distribution agreement between the Government of Ghana (GoG) and Power Distribution Service (PDS) will not be reversed, contrary to suggestions by many.
According to him, PDS is not getting back the contract to manage and distribute power in Ghana due to an act of fraud allegedly perpetrated by the company in order to secure the deal.
In an interview with Accra based Citi TV, the MP for Adansi- Asokwa said information available to him suggests that the agreement between the government of Ghana and PDS will not be reversed even though the Energy Minister, John Pater Amewu has assured Ghanaians of governments’ readiness to follow due process in settling the matter.
“From my perspective and the information that I have, there is no doubt that this document is forgery so I am clear in my mind they are not coming back. There is no way PDS is coming back, “ he insisted.
He said even though many are beginning to shift the goal post as far as blame is concerned, he is convinced that the government of Ghana will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
“For now, the concession has been handed over to ECG to take over. I think it is going to remain so forever, I know this from all indications,” he stated emphatically.
KT Hammond insisted the introduction of PDS by the erstwhile Mahama government could have been avoided if the Electricity Company of Ghana was properly funded to run its activities.
“ECG could have done the work if they had monies released to them. Successive governments have held ECG hostage because we will all agree that the bulk of the indebtedness to ECG is from government,” he said.
