EC to meet feuding parties over Ablekuma North election results

The Electoral Commission (EC) is set to initiate discussions with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the disputed Ablekuma North Constituency parliamentary election results.

This update was shared by the EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held at the EC headquarters in Accra last Wednesday.

The meeting brought together representatives from political parties, civil society organizations, the media, and various state institutions to enhance collaboration between the EC and its stakeholders.

Mrs. Mensa emphasized that the discussion with the two political parties aims to address the issue comprehensively and provide a conclusive resolution.

“We will have an in-depth meeting to discuss it,” the EC Chairperson said.

Currently, the EC has not set a specific date for the meeting.

It will be recalled that on January 4, 2025, a High Court ruling instructed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation process and announce winners for four parliamentary elections that were still pending.

While results for three constituencies have been declared, the situation in Ablekuma North remains unresolved.

The collation process resumed on January 8, 2025, but was halted due to incomplete data from three polling stations.

The collation was finally rescheduled for January 17, 2025, but was suspended again due to an attack at the EC’s office a few minutes before the collation.

Amidst all these challenges, the NPP parliamentary candidate is opposing a rerun.

“The three polling stations, we have the pink sheets. We have the original pink sheets, and we have the scanned copies, so why the rerun? “I don’t agree in any way. We are not going for any rerun. We are going to collate those three polling stations,” Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Channel One.

Meanwhile, the EC has emphasised that without complete protection from the security personnel, the collation would not resume.

As it stands now, Ewurabena Aubyn, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress, and Akua Afriyie have erected billboards claiming victory, even though the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to declare the final results of the parliamentary election.
