The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, is worried about the Electoral Commission’s readiness for the upcoming December 7 elections.
Dr. Tanko-Computer contends that with less than 10 months to the polls, the Commission is yet to release a calendar of activities to guide the elections.
“I must say this current EC appears not ready for the December 7 elections. As we speak now, we have 8 months to the general election, and this EC has no calendar.”
His comments follow the Electoral Commission’s (EC) assurance to the public and all stakeholders that it will unveil its electoral calendar for 2024 before the end of February 2024.
During an appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday, February 21, Deputy Chair of the Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare, also reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to maintaining the original December 7 date for the general elections despite earlier discussions for a change.
However, Dr. Tanko-Computer is not convinced that the EC is ready.
“The importance of the calendar is to outline key activities leading up to December 7th, including the opening of the limited registration exercise and the procurement of electoral materials,” he pointed out in an interview with Citi News.
