EC staff petitions Mahama to sack Jean Mensa, deputies

A staff member of the Electoral Commission (EC), Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, has officially requested President John Dramani Mahama to commence the process of removing the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, along with her two deputies, Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, citing alleged misconduct that he claims jeopardises the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.

In a statement released on Monday, November 24, Mr Adumadzie confirmed that the petition was filed in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which delineates the procedure for the removal of heads of independent constitutional bodies.

While he refrained from revealing the complete details of the petition as mandated by law, he disclosed that it is based on 12 counts of specified misbehaviour.

These allegations include cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence. He asserted that the actions of the three senior officials have diminished public trust in the EC and pose a threat to the integrity and independence of Ghana’s electoral process.

Mr Adumadzie expressed that his actions are motivated solely by the necessity to uphold the Constitution and enhance accountable governance, stressing the importance of maintaining the dignity of the Electoral Commission, which is vital for ensuring a credible democratic system.

He also urged President Mahama to fulfil his constitutional duty by forwarding the petition to the Chief Justice for the establishment of a prima facie case, in line with the procedures outlined in Article 146.
