The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that preparations are underway for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Naser Toure, in January, while he was receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
After the balloting held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate Baba Jamal secured the top position, while the Liberal People’s Party (LPP) candidate, Ibrahim Iddrisu, obtained the second position.
Yussif Baba Ali from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claimed the third position, with independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kannor taking the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
The outcome of this election will decide who will represent the Ayawaso East Constituency in Parliament.
Sam Dottoh Kwaah, a Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), informed the Daily Graphic that the EC is fully prepared for the by-election.
He stated that all categories of officials required for the by-election have been recruited, and training for these officials will commence today (Tuesday) and continue until Friday, February 27, 2026.
He mentioned that two Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) for each of the 113 polling stations have been prepared and delivered to the Constituency.
He also noted that the Notices of Poll for the by-election have been printed and dispatched to the constituency.
He added that the printing of Ballot Papers, Statement of Poll and Declaration of Results Forms will also begin on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Mr. Kwaah indicated that the EC anticipates a total of 49,966 registered voters to participate in the by-election.
He stated that Ballot Papers will be sent to the Constituency by Saturday, February 28, 2026.
