Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of pushing Ghana into a constitutional crisis due to its mishandling of disputed parliamentary election results.
Speaking in an interview on December 28, Mr Fuseini criticised the EC’s repeated changes to election outcomes, labelling its actions as highly incompetent and dangerous for the nation’s stability.
“The court never addressed whether the EC can declare and revise results multiple times. This issue is critical for the survival of our democracy. By God’s grace, Ghanaians are peace-loving and have chosen democracy over other forms of governance,” Fuseini remarked.
He warned that the EC’s actions risk sparking public outrage, stating, “The EC’s incompetence could plunge this country into chaos. People might rise against the Commission, and the nation could be in flames”.
Mr Fuseini’s concerns follow the re-collation of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, seven of which were declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenged these outcomes in court, arguing procedural flaws.
The Supreme Court recently annulled the re-collated results for constituencies such as Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central, citing violations of the NDC candidates’ right to a hearing.
However, the Court upheld the results for Ahafo Ano North and Nsawam Adoagyiri.
Mr Fuseini further criticised the EC for rushing the re-collation process without adequate care, stating, “There was no need to rush into re-collating results for disputed constituencies. This should have been handled more cautiously”.
He also accused the EC of acting as a partisan entity, saying, “We face a constitutional crisis because the EC seems to be an interested party in this case”.
