EC fixes March 3 date for Ayawaso East by-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as the date for a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency, setting the stage for voters to choose a new representative following the passing of their Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.

The vacancy has left many residents reflecting on the loss of their MP while also turning attention to the democratic process that lies ahead.

In response, the EC states that it is taking prompt action to ensure the constituency is not left without representation in Parliament for an extended period.

In a press release dated January 16, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the Commission outlined a clear roadmap for aspiring candidates.

Nomination forms will be available for download from the EC’s official website starting Friday, January 16, 2026.

Candidates are expected to submit their completed nomination forms at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the EC in North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

To qualify, nomination forms must be endorsed by a proposer and a seconder who are registered voters in the constituency, along with the support of eighteen other registered voters from Ayawaso East.

Applicants are also required to provide two recent bust-sized photographs with a red background.

The filing fee has been pegged at GH¢10,000 for general candidates, while female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.

The Commission noted that the by-election is being organised in line with constitutional requirements and assured the public of its commitment to a credible process, stating that it remains focused on delivering a free, fair and transparent election for the people of Ayawaso East.
